NNS Safety Song Contest Video Released

The winning entry in the Newport News Shipbuilding 2024 Safety Song Contest now comes with video.

Back in August, Nishae Falu (X33), won the contest for her song, “Safety First.” One prize was a professionally produced video. Last week, she and members of her crew who appeared in the video were treated to their own private premiere, complete with popcorn.

“I’m so proud of you all for the creativity, the talent and the message,” said Karey Malyszko, vice president of Quality. “This is going to inspire our entire shipyard.”

While safety is a serious subject, the video shows that shipbuilders can still have a good time in broadcasting that message, added Lucas Hicks, vice president of the John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) New Construction Aircraft Carrier Program.

Falu, who has worked at the shipyard for five years, credited her fellow shipbuilders for pushing her in the right direction and having faith in her talent.

“My crew actually talked me into doing it,” she said. “They said I should just try. If I don’t make it, I don’t make it, but nine times out of ten you’re going to win.”

More than 2,100 shipbuilders, friends and family members voted in the contest. Michael King (X36) was named runner-up for his song titled “Same Way I Came.”
