NNS Gearing Up for Family Day, Oct. 28

NNS Family Day is set for Saturday, Oct. 28, and Newport News Shipbuilding has released additional information, including frequently asked questions, so employees and guests can enjoy the event to the fullest.

Family Day will be held, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free lunch will be available for all attendees from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Employees and their guests must present a ticket to attend. Tickets are required for children older than 2 years. In addition, employees must bring their NNS badge to enter the shipyard that day. All guests must be accompanied by an employee with a badge.

Tickets will be distributed through each division’s representative.

The FAQs include information on parking, activities and areas of the waterfront that will be open. Pending approval, NNS will offer windshield tours of the shipyard. Employees must register for tours in advance of Family Day. Registration will open on Saturday, Oct. 21, and details about the registration process will be shared once approval for the tours has been determined. Tours are for U.S. citizens only.

NNS will collect canned goods for the upcoming NNS Holiday Food Drive during Family Day. All donations will be collected inside of the shipyard at the 37th Street turnstiles. Make it a family project to benefit the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank.

In addition, Family Day attendees can receive discounted tickets to cheer on The Apprentice School football team later in the day. The Builders take on Army Prep at the Apprentice Athletic Center at 1 p.m.

The FAQs include these logistical reminders:

  • Attendees who wish to enter the shipyard gates must wear sturdy closed-toe shoes
  • Cameras and mobile devices with cameras will be permitted in designated areas.
  • Coolers, lawn chairs, large bags, alcoholic beverages and weapons are not permitted.
  • Lunch and activities will be available at no cost. Crew stores will be available for guests to purchase items with credit/debit cards only.
  • Strollers are permitted on Family Day, but not for the pending windshield tours. Private areas will be available for nursing mothers, infants and baby changing stations.
