NNS Family Day Set for Oct. 28

Published October 4, 2023

Shipbuilders and their families can enjoy food, special exhibits and activities for children on Saturday, Oct. 28, when Newport News Shipbuilding hosts NNS Family Day.

The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will also feature windshield tours of the shipyard, pending approval. It will give families a rare look at the facilities that go into the manufacture of aircraft carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy.

If approved, tours will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Guests must sign up for a tour time in advance. For details and sign-up instructions, visit NNStoGo.com or the NNS to Go app.

The last NNS Family Day was in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic restricted large gatherings. NNS President Jennifer Boykin announced plans for 2023 Family Day earlier this year during a series of Town Hall meetings with employees.

All shipyard parking lots will be available on a first-come, first-served basis except for the Zone A lots at 41st and 42nd streets between Washington and Huntington avenues. Employees who park in All-Right Parking must pay the fee to avoid vehicles being towed.

Here are other important reminders:

  • Lunch will be served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Shipbuilders and family members who plan to enter the shipyard gate or take a windshield tour must wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes.
  • No coolers, lawn chairs, alcoholic beverages or weapons allowed.
  • Photography will be permitted in specific locations only.
  • Employees must bring their NNS badge to gain entrance to the shipyard.
  • All guests must be accompanied by an employee.
  • Tickets are required for all attendees older than 2 years.
  • Children of all ages are invited.
  • For specific questions about Family Day, please contact your division coordinator or email [email protected].

Employee volunteers are still needed for a number of tasks. Employees interested in volunteering at the event should contact Jordan Riedel.
