Navy to Commission New Jersey (SSN 796) Saturday

Virginia-class submarine New Jersey (SSN 796) will be commissioned Saturday during a ceremony in Monmouth County, New Jersey, marking its formal entry into the U.S. Navy fleet.

Built at Newport News Shipbuilding in partnership with General Dynamics Electric Boat, it is the 23rd submarine of the Virginia class and the 11th delivered by NNS. It the first submarine designed with a modification for gender integration. New Jersey was christened at NNS by Ship’s Sponsor Susan DiMarco in November 2021.

NNS President Jennifer Boykin will be among the speakers Saturday at Naval Weapons Station Earle. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and will be livestreamed.
