Longtime NNS 5K Participant Encourages Turnout

StacyAnne Schrier is looking forward to this year’s Newport News Shipbuilding 5K, which takes place next month. She first participated in the 5K – which welcomes participants from all fitness levels – about two decades ago.
“It’s an opportunity for those who are struggling to get started because you can just walk, and there is no time limit. While they definitely encourage walkers, they also recognize the runners who like to compete,” Schrier said. “People cheer you on. Everyone who comes across the finish line is celebrated.”
A warehouse manager who has been a shipbuilder for 26 years, Schrier said she has participated in the event in different ways throughout the years.
“I think I had a few years when I ran the whole thing, but mostly it’s a run-walk. And lately it’s just been a walk,” she said with a laugh. “It varies from year to year depending on how prepared I am.”
Schrier hopes a large number of shipbuilders will join her at this year’s 5K. She loves to see groups of families and friends enjoying the festivities together and plans to have her two young grandchildren in tow.
“You have to start early to encourage that fitness balance,” she said. “There’s so much tech – with phones, tablets and TVs. You’ve got to get out there to move and get some fresh air.”
The event starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Victory Landing Park in downtown Newport News. In addition to the 5K, there will be games, prizes and a health expo. Even those who may not physically be able to take part in the 5K can attend to meet people, volunteer, and learn more about health and wellness services that are available to NNS employees.
Participants will receive a T-shirt and be entered into prize drawings. The cost to register is $15 for adults and teens, and $10 for children 12 and under. Visit MyQuadMed.com/hii-nns/5k for more information and to register by Sept. 28.
