Exciting News to Share: New Parking Garage Coming to NNS

Published June 17, 2024

Today, we announced plans to construct a large parking garage that will provide approximately 2,800 parking spaces for Newport News Shipbuilding employees and U.S. Navy sailors.

One of the first commitments I made after being named president was to improve the work environment for our people to include more breakrooms, better lunch options and addressing our long-standing parking challenge. While this garage does not completely eliminate our parking challenges, it is a significant step in our ongoing efforts to improve the working experience for our shipbuilders and the sailors who serve on the vessels we build and overhaul.

This new garage is part of a larger plan to revitalize downtown Newport News – our shipyard’s home for the past 138 years. I am grateful for our partners – the city of Newport News, the U.S. Navy and the commonwealth of Virginia – whose leadership has been critical in bringing this vision to life.

The garage will be built on the site of existing employee parking lots that contain 749 spaces between 37th and 39th streets along Huntington Avenue and Warwick Boulevard. Once complete, it will restore those spaces and include an additional 2,000.

While we will do all we can to minimize the impact to employees, there will be a period of time when the existing lots close for construction. During that time, off-site parking options and shuttle services will be provided to make up for the temporary loss of the 749 parking spaces. We expect construction to begin later this year, and we will share information as it becomes available. A list of frequently asked questions is available on MyNNS and our NNS to Go app.

This news is a long time coming. Change isn’t always immediate, and we will keep fighting for what is important. Thank you for your patience and support as we move forward with planning and construction.

Respectfully,
Jennifer Boykin
President, Newport News Shipbuilding
