Columbia Leaders Recognize Foundry Team

Newport News Shipbuilding’s Foundry team was recognized earlier this month for progress on castings for the District of Columbia (SSBN 826) by Brandi Smith, vice president of Columbia-Class Submarine Construction, and Columbia Program Director Bruce Easterson.
The Foundry has poured all 122 castings for the NNS modules for SSBN 826 – the first boat of the Columbia class – and has shipped 105 of them. The final 17 castings are in finishing operations and will be complete later this year.
For producing these castings, Smith and Easterson provided “high five” Columbia-class coins to employees across the value stream: patternmaking; molding and pouring; finishing operations of arcing, grinding, and heat treatment; welding; rigging and crane operations; inspection; O43 on-site system maintenance; foundry engineering; and CFA production control.
