Celebrate Veterans Next Week at NNS

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11, and the Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) at Newport News Shipbuilding will hold events all next week to honor those who have served our country, and to celebrate the many veteran shipbuilders at NNS. Take time to support these events:

  • 11-15: VERG will provide “Thank You bags” to veterans on a first-come, first-served basis. Managers and foremen should email Janice Boone with the following information: Point of contact, Yardmail address of POC and number of bags needed for the team.
  • Monday, Nov. 11: On Veterans Day, take a few minutes to thank veterans for their service, as well as military families for their support, resilience and sacrifice. If you are a veteran, thank you for your service, courage, dedication and hard work.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 12: From 11 a.m. to noon, celebrate the U.S. Marine Corps birthday with cake in Bldg. 4911(Consolidated Trades Building). For questions, contact Janice Boone. There is no charge number for this event and all are welcome.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 13: On Service Mash-Up Day, show pride in your service by wearing a favorite ball cap, T-shirt., etc. Take a photo and email to Janice Boone. There is no charge for this event and all are welcome to participate. ​​Please adhere to company photo policies.
  • Thursday, Nov. 14: From Noon-12:30 p.m., celebrate Community Service Day. NNS employees will meet at tugboat Dorothy, near Bldg. 520, for a group photo at 12:05 p.m. Employees are encouraged to wear shirts that represent their favorite branch of service or patriotic colors. Then employees will pick up litter along Washington and Huntington avenues. VERG will supply gloves and bags. There is no charge for this event, and all are welcome.   • Friday, Nov. 15: From 4 to 5:30 p.m., join VERG for a meet and greet at Coastal Fermentory, 206 23rd St., Newport News. Meet VERG board members and other members. There is no charge for this event and all are welcome. For questions, contact Bethany Mills.
  • Saturday, Nov. 16: From 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., bring holiday cheer to Veterans Affairs hospital patients by making Christmas cards at The Mariners’ Museum and Park, 100 Museum Drive, Newport News. VERG will provide supplies, and every participant will receive free tickets to the museum. There is no charge for this event and all are welcome. For questions, contact Janice Boone​.
  • Saturday, Nov. 16: From noon to 4:45 p.m., get help filing disability benefits claims by talking with a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) claims officer. There is no charge for this event. For questions, contact Marcia Stewart.
