Shipbuilders,

It has been 22 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks forever changed our nation. As painful as that day was for every American, we must never forget the innocent lives that were lost or the shock, horror and grief we felt that day.

This somber anniversary highlights the importance of the work we do every day as shipbuilders. “The mission starts with us,” isn’t just something we say – it’s what we believe. We’re building, overhauling and maintaining U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines that defend our freedom and keep our adversaries at bay. This is a tremendous responsibility, and our work must be safely carried out with quality and integrity in all that we do.

Now that we are more than two decades removed from the Sept. 11 attacks, it’s imperative that those of us who have vivid memories of that day share with younger shipbuilders, family members and friends.

No matter your role at Newport News Shipbuilding, always remember that our nation needs us. We are here because what we do matters.
