Shipbuilder Steering the Way
Published April 9, 2025
Kelsey Lai (O05) was honored with a Level One On-the-Spot Ethics Award for taking quick action to assist a fellow shipbuilder who had a medical emergency at work.
Lai – a volunteer paramedic in Virginia Beach – was called upon to help when a co-worker had a seizure. As first responders were on the way to the building, Lai calmly assessed the shipbuilder’s situation, clearing his airway and having someone else hold his head to the side. She verified the shipbuilder’s vitals were as expected.
When first responders took over, Lai returned to her workstation.
Karey Malyszko, vice president of Quality, Process Excellence and Plant Operations, met with Lai to present her award and thank her for taking action.
