Shipbuilder Honored at Peninsula Sports Club

Men’s basketball player Karree Smith was named the Peninsula Sports Club Athlete of the Year for The Apprentice School Monday at its 74th Annual Headliners Night.

Smith was named a 2023-24 USCAA First Team All-American after leading The Apprentice School men’s basketball team to their first national championship in over two decades.

Smith, a native of Virginia Beach, tallied 419 points during the season, averaging 14 points per game. He shot over 55% from the floor, including scoring a season-high 25 points at the midway point of the season against Cheyney University.

Smith scored double figures in all three USCAA Tournament contests on the way to being named to the All-Tournament Team. He was also a first team All-Conference honoree and surpassed 1,000 career points both as a Builder and his entire collegiate career.

Additionally, Smith was the winner of the USCAA Slam Dunk Competition, scoring three perfect dunks scored at 50 points each.

Also honored Monday night was former Apprentice School head men’s basketball coach Evan Kee, who received the Thad Madden Award, given to those who accomplish excellence in college or professional sports.
